Recognizing and Dealing With Adolescent Eating
Disorders
Eating disorders are found in all age groups however the
highest number is in adolescents. Many of those who discover
that they have an eating disorder later in life realize that it
all started in their adolescence.
What Causes Eating Disorders
There are many causes to eating disorders such as: self-esteem,
wanting to fit in, stress, the desire to stand out in one way
or the other and so on. Eating disorders are both when you
overeat or when you starve yourself; either way you are putting
your health and sometimes even your life in jeopardy.
Adolescent eating disorders are created sometimes without even
realizing you are doing so, for example, your girlfriends wear
two sizes smaller clothes than you do and you want to look and
shop like they do, subconsciously you start starving yourself
so you can lose weight faster.
Overeating can start the same way but this time you only get
relief from a stressful situation when you eat something you
like; the cravings can be both for sweet items or salty, but
you must eat them right away even if you have just had your
meal.
Dealing With Adolescent Eating Disorders
It is important that you watch the eating habits of your
children carefully, as you will truly never know when they may
slip into an eating disorder and you should be able to
recognize it before it is too late. Speak to your children
about eating disorders, make them aware of the risks involved.
Explain the difference between poor eating habits and eating
disorders.
Adolescence is a very confusing age through which we all have
to pass and therefore you must be very careful when talking to
an adolescent you suspect may have or may be on the verge of
having an eating disorder. If not handled properly, with plenty
of love and support, he or she will most likely deny the
problem. Work with your child in order to make him/her admit
the problem's existence because only then any action can be
taken.
Adolescent eating disorders can only be treated if and when the
person will acknowledge them and accept any help and/or
support. Adolescent eating disorders are common and it is also
common that he/she may not wish to give up this practice yet,
therefore, working with your child is very important in order
to convince him/her to accept help and support.
