Anorexia Eating Disorder: Most Prevalent in
Western Civilizations
In many cultures today in the Western world the idea of being
very thin is often seen as being the same as being very
beautiful, as having success as well as happiness. Almost every
person alive today knows the effect that weight and body shape
has on their own self-image.
This is not to say that eating disorders are only about dieting
or vanity. They are not. They are actually complicated
psychological aberrations through which a person develops his
or her eating patterns and then habitually maintains them as a
means of handling other problems that occur in his or her
life.
The Dangers of Anorexia
Statistics show that more than five million Americans are
afflicted by serious as well as life-threatening eating
disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa,
compulsive eating, obesity and pica. If these aberrations are
not treated, the emotional, psychological as well as physical
penalties can get out of hand and sometimes can even result in
death.
Anorexia nervosa is very dangerous. This is when a person
intentionally deprives themselves of food. This may even take
the extreme form of starving in an attempt to attain much
sought after thinness.
Anorexia eating disorder means that the person strives for
extreme weight loss, losing all sight of normal body image.
Even when they are extremely thin, the person will consider him
or herself to be fat. Anorexia eating disorder lowers a
person’s self-esteem and mainly affects girls as well as young
women.
Anorexia eating disorder is a method of using food or starving
the self to feel that the person is more in control of his or
her life and also when trying to ease tension, anger and
anxiety, it is known to play a major role.
There may be several contributing factors for a person to
suffer from an anorexia eating disorder, including biology,
culture, personal feelings, stressful events or life changes,
and finally, families.
A person suffering anorexia eating disorder won’t feel
energetic (because they do not consume enough calories) and so
they become progressively weaker, lacking in motivation. If
help is not gotten before it is too late, the person with
anorexia nervosa can literally starve themselves to death.
